friday, may 10, 2013

5 – 8 pm

Ted Laredo will be exhibiting art work that riffs on the lucent properties of various media including galvanized steel, phosphorescent cotton twill tape and glass micro beads.

The pieces in the exhibit incorporate cotton-twill tape arranged in geometric configurations such as honeycomb cells and cube forms, some affixed over micro bead coated panels and painted with phosphorescent acrylics, some affixed to galvanized steel panels with magnets. During the day, the reflective bead-coated surfaces have a luminous, almost pearlescent glow. At night, the painted geometric forms emit a soft light of their own, captured earlier in the day from the available light striking their surfaces. “The reflective glass beads came out of the idea of having a reflective quality without electricity,” Laredo said. “Something that’s ethereal, something you can’t quite grasp but is pleasing to the eye.” Several pieces, including one called naphthol red eclipse and another called cobalt blue mono-diptych, are panels without twill tape that appear monochromatic under direct light sources but change dramatically when the lights are off.
